How to Write an Essay

The simplest way to start your essay is with a general statement about the topic. After that, you should provide some background information about the specific details you will discuss in your essay. If you are writing about a novel, for example, now would be a good time to give a brief summary about the parts of the story you will reference later. After you have introduced the reader to your topic, you should write your thesis statement. A good thesis statement states your opinions about the topic and provides the structure for the rest of your essay. In this essay you will learn about how to write a body paragraph, cite evidence, and most importantly make a compelling argument.

After your introduction, your first body paragraph should be about the first thing you mentioned in your thesis--in this case: how to write a body paragraph. A good body paragraph should contain relevant information that supports your thesis. Try to aim for at least three sentences providing additional evidence about your topic. If you have specific facts and figures which support your argument, now would be the time to include them. Once you have provided this evidence, you should write a transition sentence leading into your second paragraph; for example, how does one properly cite this evidence?

Citing evidence is not as complicated as you might think. Sure, there are a lot of complicated rules for writing bibliographies (APA, MLA, etc.) but as for citing evidence in your essay, it doesn’t need to be so difficult. If you are paraphrasing or summarizing what happened in the story, try your best to include the part of the story where the action occurred in parentheses at the end of your sentence, for example (Act 1, Chapter 3, pages 34-37). If you are citing a direct quote, you must include the exact page number where the quote appears such as (page 38). If you want to cite an article or something without clear page numbers, you should include a numbered footnote[1] which corresponds to a numbered entry at the end of your essay. See, it’s not so hard to cite evidence; the real challenge lies in writing a compelling argument.

The most important part of writing an essay is making a compelling argument. After all, an essay is basically a text you write to convince other people of your opinions. You can write a perfectly formatted essay and provide lots of evidence, but if your thesis is not interesting to your reader then what was the point? You shouldn’t just include common sense opinions and provide obvious evidence to support them; instead you should try to come up with original ideas and seek evidence that your reader might not already know. If you can, try to think of reasons why people might disagree with your ideas and then provide additional evidence which disproves these ideas. Most of all though, stay consistent--don’t change your thesis halfway through your essay!

After you have written all your body paragraphs, cited all your evidence, and made all your arguments, you should conclude your essay by restating your thesis. Hopefully, writing your essay will have given you a better understanding of the topic, so it shouldn’t be so hard to rewrite your thesis in a different way. You can also reiterate some of the most important information from your body paragraphs, but be sure to use different words so as not to sound repetitive. Finally, you should leave your reader with something interested to think about, or perhaps a rhetorical question. Now, are you ready to start writing your essay?
